Apple buys Shazam; expanding their music services
Apple have confirmed that they have purchased Shazam for $400m
An Apple spokesperson told The Verge ‘We are thrilled that Shazam and its talented team will be joining Apple,’
The spokesperson added, ‘Apple Music and Shazam are a natural fit, sharing a passion for music discovery and delivering great music experiences to our users.’
TechCrunch were the first to report this story after a source revealed to them that Apple were close to purchasing Shazam (an app that recognises music).
According to the BBC, Shazam has more than 100 monthly subscribers, most of which comes from paid on referrals to Apple. As highlighted by the BBC, Apple’s purchase of Shazam will mean that they cut out the middle man, thus not paying any commission. In addition, this will affect competitors such as Spotify, because presumably Shazam will no longer refer users to other music provider.
