Would you upload a nude image to Facebook to stop others from posting it?

The statistics:

The Data & Society Research Institute found that ‘One in twenty-five Americans has been a victim of revenge porn’.

The Debrief reported that following the  UK law introduced in 2015 that criminalised the sharing of sexually explicit content without the person’s consent they had 1160 reports of revenge porn from April to December 2015. From these reports, Facebook was found to be the worst perpetrator, Facebook was the platform used in 68% of the reported cases.

RMIT University and Monash University surveyed more than 4200 people and found that one in five Australians have been a victim of ‘image-based’ abuse. The most common types of abuse are: taking sexual images without consent, distributing images without consent and threatening to share these images.

Facebook’s trail:

In light of this issue, Facebook are trialling a new tool to combat ‘revenge porn’ in Australia with a government agency led by the e-safety commissioner.

Speaking to ABC News, Julie Inman Grant (e-Safety Commissioner) said that ‘victims of “image-based abuse” would be able to take action before photos were posted to Facebook, Instagram or Messenger’ with this new tool.

The well-known blog 9to5Mac reported that the new tool works by sending the nude picture to yourself in Messenger. Facebook then creates a digital fingerprint (an encrypted version of the data in the image file) so that if anyone were to try and upload a photo, it would be checked against that fingerprint and subsequently rejected.

This trial to combat revenge porn would work in alignment with the photo flagging tool that allows users to identify any intimate photos that have been posted without their consent. When a photo is flagged it is reviewed by the operations teams remove it if it violates their standards. Once it has been removed, Facebook use photo matching technology to not allow the photo to be uploaded again.
